From AOL Member Services:

Recognizing Online Scams

Anonymity is a fact of life in cyberspace, and things are not always what they seem.

Be alert. The most common scams on AOL exist to get your confidential information -- your password or billing information.

Remember: No employee or representative of AOL will ever ask for your password or billing information. However, someone POSING as an AOL employee may. So beware!

While AOL has no specific rule against you giving out your name, address or other personal information online, please understand that you do so at your own risk. If you are careless online in giving out your personal information, you may find yourself the recipient of threatening or harrassing phone calls, or you may become the victim of a stalker.

Someone who has obtained your password could sign on to your account and violate the Terms of Service, causing your AOL account to be terminated.

If you give out your billing information, someone could go on a spending spree at your expense or even completely ruin your credit.

Be cautious and use common sense in determining exactly what, and how much, you reveal about yourself to others. If your children are using AOL, you should instruct them not to reveal any personal information without checking with you first. If you believe another member's requests for this personal information is suspicious, report it to AOL at Keyword: Notify AOL
